Comments about Garmin Garmin eTrex Handheld Global Positioning System:
A good unit that works well with low signal levels such as heavy tree canopy. Batteries typically last 1 day of heavy use. The plastic face scratches very easily so keep it in a protective bag when not in use. The accessory carrying case has a bad glare in sunlight. Works well with Delorme Topo Maps on a laptop.
Comments about Garmin Garmin eTrex Handheld Global Positioning System:
The E-Trex packs a lot of features into a tiny package. It picks up signals in a variety of conditions, and is quite accurate; I generally get the accuracy to within 15 feet most of the time. And it is designed to be operated with one hand. The only drawbacks are that it only stores one reversible route and when it's not on battery-save, it drinks batteries (on battery save you can get 20+ hours of use out of it). But unless you're planning on a major trek, you probably won't need more than one route. I chose this unit over others because of the Garmin reputation, the size, and it had the features I wanted (mainly the 500 waypoints). Another advantage is that you can hook the E-Trex to your PC via an interface and transfer waypoints and routes. Also, Garmin has updates for the software for the unit and with the PC interface, you can update your E-trex. I would highly recommend this product to someone who wants a GPS unit with lots of features, but doesn't have a ton of money to spend.
